Event description

Description

On Saturday March 10 2018 Around the Campfire Inc will hold its inaugural fundraising dinner in Sydney at the prestigious University of NSW Leighton Hall.

Money raised on the night will fund our Indigenous school nurse position in the remote community of Yuendumu in the NT. Our goal is to establish the event as an annual fundraiser in Sydney to fund the school nurse position for many years. Our target for the evening is $80,000 to enable the nurse position to commence at the beginning of Term 3 2018.

Enjoy an amazing 3 course dinner from Sydney's Gastronomy including paired wines by Winestate Wine maker of the Year Shane Harris from Wines by Geoff Hardy in Mclaren Vale, South Australia.

We will use the event to announce the AFL as an official partner of the Around the Campfire Inc program. The Around the Campfire Inc program will become part of the AFL's new Reconciliation Action Plan to strengthen their commitment to Indigenous health.

Due to our new partnership with the AFL all 18 AFL clubs will be requested to attend. Also present will be Federal politicians such as Australia’s First Indigenous women elected to the Federal House of Representatives Linda Burney, Senator Nigel Scullion, Around the Campfire Inc ambassadors NFL player Australian Adam Gotsis and AFLW Crows Indigenous player Ruth Wallace, plus a host of media and entertainment personalities.

We are lucky to have joint Master of Ceremonies for the night. Wiradjuri man, former NRL player and professional boxer Joe Williams will be joined by Narrungar, Noongar and Kaurna woman, International actress of stage and screen Natasha Wanganeen.

Adam Gotsis will engage the audience speaking about his first two years in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. The world of professional sport in the US is something we all find intriguing and will be fascinating to listen to Adam speak. Joe Williams will speak about his journey through the NRL and pro boxing, to establishing and operating mental health organisation The Enenmy Within, and his new book which is released in Febuary 2018. Joe is a proud Wirajuri man who understands the role Indigenous women must play to improve Indigenous health across Australia in particular remote communties.

International reggae star Mishka will travel to Australia with his 3 piece band to entertain us for the night. Mishka’s music is Caribbean at the core, from bass heavy roots reggae, to mellow acoustic ballads, songs of love, songs of social justice and consciousness, you have to hear for yourself and experience the music. Mishka’s releases have charted around the globe including three releases reaching the #1 spot on Billboard Magazine’s Reggae chart. Mishka will be joined by special guests iconic Australian band Ganggajang.

There are many opportunities to support our program, with no more obvious than supporting our event in Sydney. Through buying a table or sponsoring the night, it enables Around the Campfire Inc to work with more Indigenous women across the country through our Indigenous school nurse programs and our women's AFL carnivals at Adelaide and Perth.

Women are the key to improving the health of Indigenous Australians, further empowering and educating Indigenous women in remote communities and across the country will help drive chronic disease numbers down and close the gap on life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
