2017 Thursday Evening Short Courses (18:00-21:00)

This is a set course to provide beginners with a hands-on introduction to Japanese joinery. This course is also designed to get wider basics of general woodworking by joining through out the year. Experienced students are also welcome to get hands-on knowledge on Japanese tools or joinery.

As most Japanese joinery is made with hand tools, this course will focus on mastering the proper skills of hand tools.

*Discount: For attendance from your second year.

*There will be an additional field trip to look at timber resources (voluntary participation).

Term 1

Hand tools basics & Box making workshop

2 Feb – 6 Apr, 10 x 3hours session, 10 weeks, up to 5 students

$600 + $230 (Option: recommend to purchase for the use in class: 48mm Ko-Ganna plane and a 12mm chisels)

Note : This Application is only for Term 1


For serious beginners, intermediate serious Japanese tool lovers. Course will introduce some Japanese hand tools and the importance of keeping blades sharp. The course content will include Japanese water stone sharpening, fine tuning Japanese chisels and planes, and box making using your own tuned tools.

*Tool Purchase

It is recommended to buy your own tools to learn about tuning your tools from scratch. We will learn about plane and chisels thorough tuning themselves, and use it to make a project.

KOITOYA can supply the tools from Inoue Hamono (Tokyo). Traditional style Tool shop. Tools are professional grade but are not so expensive, just made by anonymous blacksmith.

You can also bring your own or tools purchased second hand buying new tools is optional. Contact me if you want to discuss with me.

You can also make your own plane in the class, instead of buying a new one, as it is cheaper to purchase just a blade. This is recomended for experienced woodworker. Contact me if you want to discuss.
