Event description

Description

You are invited to join us for a celebratory evening of excellence, passion and discovery as the ANU School of Music celebrates the achievements of 2017 with a Jazz Gala Concert featuring special guests, School of Music Alumni, Idea of North.

The Idea of North were formed as a jazz-based, a capella quartet, in Canberra in 1993, by Nick Begbie (tenor), Meg Corson (alto), Trish Delaney-Brown (soprano) and Andrew Piper (bass). All four members were students at the Canberra School of Music, which later became the ANU School of Music. The group are described as a jazz quartet but they also sing pop, R&B, classical, folk, soul and gospel and have covered material by the Beatles, Peter Allen, the Muppets, Aretha Franklin and Bee Gees.

In March 2002 Corson was replaced as alto by Naomi Crellin. Delaney-Brown was replaced on soprano in February 2007 by Sally Cameron. The group won the Best Jazz Album category at the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 for Feels Like Spring (collaboration with James Morrison) and again in 2013 for Smile.

The Idea of North will perform with the Jazz and Contemporary Faculty Ensemble; (John Mackey [saxophone], Greg Stott [guitar], James Luke [double bass], Damien Slingsby [piano], Alumni and students of the ANU School of Music.

This celebratory event is open to the public. You can secure your tickets tickets via EventBrite to reserve your place. A week before the concert, on Friday 29 September, a second release of tickets will be on sale.
