Description

Preventing and Managing the Consequences of Obesity:
Are we there yet?

presented by

Professor Alison Venn

Director, Menzies Institute for Medical Research

Professor Venn’s research background is focused on immunology and epidemiology, and her current research interests are in the causes, prevention and management of chronic disease. She has a particular focus on the factors that lead to the development of cardiovascular disease and diabetes later in life. In this lecture to mark the memory of Arthur Cobbold, she will discuss the consequences of obesity, and what we can do to prevent and manage this epidemic.

Professor Alison Venn completed her PhD in immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research in the UK. Following postdoctoral research in malaria immunology at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, she trained as an epidemiologist and spent ten years researching reproductive health at La Trobe University. Her breadth of experience from the laboratory to policy, identifying multidisciplinary approaches to solving complex problems, led to her appointment as Director in November 2015 to the lead the Menzies Institute for Medical Research.

Presented in partnership with the
Medical Protection Society of Tasmania.
