Event Details

Online registrations have closed however, you may still register in person at DRLC up until 11am Sunday 16 October!

Des Renford Leisure Centre and The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute invite you to be part of the Guinness World Record Attempt for the Largest Thong Race!

What is it?
The most amount of people to walk/ run 1km in thongs.

Date: Sunday 16 October 2016
Time: 11.30am (for 12pm start)
Where: Heffron Park, Maroubra (opp. DRLC entrance)

Who can participate:
The race (we use that term loosely) is open to all ages.
Basically, if you can walk/run 1km in a pair of thongs you're good to go! This means Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Kids... you can bring the whole family!!

The cost is $10 per person with all proceeds going to The Des Renford Chair of Heart Research held by The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

What's included in the price?

  • Race entry
  • A brand new pair of stylin' double pluggers (that means new thongs for you younger generation)
  • Entry into the Des Renford Chair of Heart Charity Gala Day (see below)
  • A participation medal

Guinness states that all participants must wear thongs "that have not been adapted for the race in any way".

Before and After The 'Thong Race':

DRLC will be holding the annual Des Renford Chair of Heart Research Charity Gala Day where there will be bumper boats, a petting zoo, pony rides, go carts, water rollers, the giant pool inflatable, character appearances and lots of other great things for the kiddies and families to enjoy!
The gala day runs from 7am - 5pm.
Entry into the gala day is included in your race ticket or make a $4 donation at the door.

Why Should I Do This?
The Guinness World Record for the Largest Thong Race was held by Australia in 2012 with 362 participants. It has since been broken (twice!) by our friends in the U.S of A and currently stands at 805 people!
Now, given that there is arguably nothing more Australian than the ol' aussie thong it seems reasonable to think we should be able to generate some patriotic pride and beat the Americans at yet another sporting contest... doesn't it!?

Did we also mention this is ALL for CHARITY?

So, share this with EVERYONE! It is sure to be a great community event.

Let's bring this back home people!

All proceeds from both the thong race and the gala day go to The Des Renford Chair of Heart Research held by The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

There is no age limit to participate in this World Record attempt, however, all participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian aged 18 or over. DRLC requests that every person who completes an online registration brings photo ID to the event in order to collect their race-pack (NB: if your registration is for more than one person, DRLC only requires photo ID from the person who completed the registration).

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

While there is parking at DRLC, car parks within Heffron Park and on-street parking on surrounding roads, we strongly advise participants to catch public transport to the event.  DRLC expects a great turn-out on the day, so public transport will ultimately save you time and hassle.  Buses are frequent along both Anzac Parade and Bunnerong Road.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?

If you need further information with regard to this World Record Attempt please email

 Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

Yes.  If you are no longer able to make the World Record Attempt, please let us know ASAP so we can update the details in our system - all registration transfers need to be made prior to online registration closing on 13/10/16.  For Guinness to recognise this as a World Record we need to make sure everything and everyone is accounted for, so it is important all participant details are accurate.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Yes - this will speed up the process for you to collect your race-pack.  If you forget your printed ticket do not worry too much - as long as you have your photo ID we will be able to locate your race-pack easily enough.

 What is the refund policy?

Unfortunately there are no refunds for this event. With proceeds from the World Record attempt going to help the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, your support will still be greatly appreciated even if you can no longer attend the event.

The name on the registration/ticket doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?

Please refer to "Is my registration/ticket transferrable?" above.  If you have not been able to transfer your ticket prior to the online registration closing, please contact ASAP with the details of the person who will be using your ticket.  If no notification or transfer has been confirmed prior to race day, any tickets presented by attendees with a different name will not be accepted.
