The AAVWS is more than a forum for wines that fall outside the mainstream. We encourage cutting-edge judging procedures and provide a host of social and educational events that promote knowledge sharing and the ferment of ideas. In 2014 we instigated a fellowship for talented and passionate candidates to visit Mildura to experience the show and become new alternative variety ambassadors.
In 1999 Stefano de Pieri and Bruce Chalmers, along with Dr. Rod Bonfiglioli, initiated the Sangiovese Awards and continued in 2000 with the Australian Italian Wine Show. Following the success of these shows, the first Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show was held in Mildura in November 2001.

TALK & TASTE - OUTSIDE IN
Friday 4th November 2016
Venue: Mildura Workingmans Club, Function Room, Upstairs 100-110 Deakin Ave, Mildura
Time: 1pm – 5pm
The 2016 AAVWS Talk & Taste takes a good hard look from the ‘Outside In’ to see what the rest of the world really thinks or knows about alternative variety wines from Australia and New Zealand. At AAVWS we have been talking about and encouraging the growing and making of non-mainstream wines for 15 years so it feels like an established and recognised sector of the Australian wine scene. But is it? At the 2016 Talk & Taste we will endeavour to find out.
For the first time the Talk & Taste will present a 100% marketing focused program looking at image, reputation & perception with a strong focus on export market analysis and development. The engaging and diverse sessions planned for the day will address these questions:
How does the rest of the world view Australian ‘alternative’ variety wines?
What are our marketing challenges and advantages with these wines on a global platform?
Do people understand (or want to) why we are growing and making these wines?
How do we tell the story to a global audience and get it right?
Can the way we serve these wines make a difference to consumer perceptions?
What’s in a brand/label? Do visual messages sell wines?
Do wine labels reflect what’s in the bottle and does it matter?
The afternoon will kick off with a keynote address from our International Guest Judge Sarah Ahmed, an Australian and Portuguese wine expert and journalist from the UK who will give us some insight into how the kind of wines we celebrate at the AAVWS are perceived in the UK.
Later in the day our long term partners Riedel will present a tailored version of their Riedel Wine Glass Experience focused on a couple of feature alternative varieties and which glass shape best presents those wines to drinkers and diners.
To wrap up a panel discussion hosted by our Chief of Judges Jane Faulkner will take a look at branding and labels with the valuable input of wine producers, retailers, graphic designers and marketing experts. This session will include a blind tasting to test whether the labels really do match to the wines they are wrapped around.
