Description

How can international law improve the living conditions of persons with disabilities worldwide, including in countries such as Australia where persons with disabilities experience discrimination in the enjoyment of their rights to employment, education and freedom from violence, as well as other human rights? Particularly in developing countries, what is the usefulness of international law as a trigger for change? Join us at the AHRCentre’s 2015 Annual Lecture as Gerard Quinn and Graeme Innes AM discuss and debate the relevance of a global agenda for disability rights.

Graeme Innes AM is the Former Disability Discrimination Commissioner, a human rights lawyer and disability advocate for more than thirty years. He now works as a Non-Executive Director, consultant and conference presenter. He shares his passion for disability rights with a love of cricket and sailing.

Professor Gerard Quinn is a former member of the Irish Human Rights Commission and Vice President of the European Committee on Social Rights. He is currently on sabbatical leave from his post as Academic Director of the Centre on Disability Law & Policy at the National University of Ireland. He combines his passion for disability rights with walking in the West of Ireland and is a former all-Ireland champion traditional accordion player.

Following the lecture, join us at the Exhibition Space, Level 1, UNSW Law to view Paula Bronstein's Living with chains, a documentary photography exhibition on people with disabilities in Indonesia. Light refreshments will be served.
