Description

Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar
“Exploring the Links’
Edenhope Mechanics Institute Hall
Thursday September 5, 2012, 9.30am-9.00pm

The 16th Annual Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar is exploring linkages this year.

Linkages for biodiversity occur at many levels; from small shelterbelts on farms to large scale continental Biolinks, for a single species or whole ecological communities. All of these are important to sustain Biodiversity over time and space. This year you will hear about some of the projects that endeavour connecting Australia’s Biodiversity.

But linkages have other meanings in our environment. This year we will also see how modern urban design or traditional aboriginal practices are linked to conservation. We will also explore the links between botanical gardens and Biodiversity and how big business and conservation can link and work together?

The day’s program includes a full day of presentations, a field trip to a local bushland project and a dinner.

This seminar is a popular annual activity for people involved in Landcare, farming, NRM and conservation and a great hub to meet, talk and creates some new links.

Some of the presenters will be:

  • Prof Tim Entwisle: scientist and scientific communicator, and Director & Chief Executive of Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens - Foraging for Freshwater Red Algae in Australia
  • Keith Bradby: Director of Australia’s “Gondwana Link” and convenor of the Australian Connectivity Council -
Exploring Gondwana Link – myths, fallacies and maybe a few hard truths
  • Dr. Mauro Baracco: School of Architecture and Design RMIT University -
All Change, Regenerated Towns in Regenerated Nature: Urban Case Studies in the West Wimmera
  • Dr Joe Benshemesh: Latrobe University - Mallefowl news
  • Steve Bourne: Naracoorte Lucindale Council and formerly the Naracoorte Caves - Creatures of the night
  • Sophie Bickford, Central Victorian Biolinks
  • Amy Wood, Archaeologist - Reading the landscape – cultural links in the Wimmera
