Event description

Description

Join us for the 14th edition of the Latin American Film Festival in Australia: a non-profit collaboration between the Latin American embassies in Australia and the University of Melbourne. For two weeks we will present a free showcase of cinema from across the whole region.

Film 12: El Salvador

El Desagravio (The Claim). Dir: Gianni Beretta, Patrik Soergel.

Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, was assassinated in 1980 by death squads. Pope Francis, upon his arrival in 2013, initiated the process of his canonization, a stormy one that had divided the ecclesiastical institutions. The importance of Romero trascends that of El Salvador. In his honour, United Nations celebrates every 24th of March as the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims.

This special event will mark the closing night of our festival. Please join us from 5pm onwards for an informal panel of speakers who will give some context to the work of Romero and the social struggles of El Salvador. Refreshments will be served. The film screening will commence at 6,30pm.
