=============================================================

This program has been designed for parents of babies born preterm, who are transitioning from the Special or Intensive Care Nursery to home. The focus is safe sleeping practices, to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS.

Dr Rose Boland will outline and explain important changes you need to make when transitioning from nursery to home to ensure your baby is in a safe environment every time they are placed down for a sleep.

This 1.5-2 hour virtual class (via zoom) is designed to compliment the E-learning program, Safe Sleeping for Preterm Babies: the transition from SCN/NICU to home.

In this class, Safe Sleeping for Preterm Babies, you will learn:

  • Risk factors for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS
  • Nursery practices: what needs to change once you are home and why:
  • Sleep positions (why "back is best")
  • How to create a safe sleep environment for your baby at home, day and night
  • The importance of avoiding over-heating (thermal stress)
    • Dressing your baby for sleep
    • Clothes and bedding amount
    • Room temperature for sleeping
  • Protective strategies to reduce the risk of SUDI, including SIDS
  • Use of baby slings and carriers
  • Car capsules and car seats for preterm and low birth weight babies
  • Nursery products that are unsafe for babies, are not recommended, and can pose a risk of SUDI, including SIDS ('cot death')

Once you register for this class, information about how to join will be sent to you. After the class, you will receive resources for safe sleeping for babies.

We hope you find this program informative, practical and empowering as parents and grandparents.
