About the talk:
This talk will look at how the idea of the Barbarian was manufactured in Antiquity, and how it was passed on from classical Greece to the Roman Empire to become a potent way of classifying humanity that helped support imperial conquest and power, and how it became embedded in early European states.
About the speaker:
Andrew Gillett is an Associate Professor of Ancient History at Macquarie University and a member of the Ancient Cultures Research Centre. He researches and teaches in the field of Late Antiquity, with specific interests in the late Roman empire and early medieval western Europe, fourth to seventh centuries.
