Event Details

Grattan Institute is pleased to present Professor Andrew Hamilton, Vice-Chancellor, the University of Oxford, in an illuminating discussion about what is required to create a world class university.

In an era of globalisation, everyone wants to be world class.  But what is the real measure of a world class university, and what does it take to get there?

Professor Andrew Hamilton has been a leader in two universities that are world class by any measure, first as Provost at Yale and now as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

Professor Hamilton will be joined by Professor Glyn Davis, Universities Australia Chair 2011 - 2013, Professor Margaret Gardner, Vice-Chancellor, RMIT University, and Professor Judith Brett, Head of the School of Social Sciences, La Trobe University, for their perspectives on creating world class universities in Australia.

About the Speaker

Professor Andrew Hamilton was admitted as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford on 6 October 2009.

Previously he was Provost of Yale from 2004 until 2008, where his achievements included the re-establishment of the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Sciences after a 40-year hiatus, a reform of the tenure process, and the significant enhancement of the Yale undergraduate curriculum.

Professor Hamilton also has a distinguished academic career in chemistry.  He has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he received the International Izatt Christiansen Award in Macrocyclic Chemistry in 2011.
