Dey Alexander is a web content specialist with over 17 years experience on a range of web projects. She's watched hundreds of usability tests and seen the problems that poor content creates. She reads widely and monitors research on web content usability and accessibility. Dey will share her experiences and research findings to give you a good sense of what does and doesn't work well online.

We will look at how people read online, reviewing the latest research and discussing how this should affect the way we design content.

Users want useful content — content that answers their questions or helps them with a task. But sometimes our content misses the mark. We discuss how planning can help, and get participants involved in a brainstorming activity on better planning.

Finding the right page is the first challenge our users face. We’ll look at ways to write content to make it easier to find, re-find and share on social media networks. We’ll discuss what writers need to know about search engine optimisation and users’ search behaviour.

Even when a user has found the right page, they may struggle to find the part of the content they are interested in. We’ll look at how to structure and design content to make it easier to scan-read. We’ll discuss the role of chunking, order, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, graphics and the placement of links in content.

It’s a little harder to read online and people tend to move quickly, so we need to write content that’s easy to read. In this section, we’ll cover choosing the right words, writing shorter sentences, using the active voice, using verbs rather than nouns, using personal pronouns and watching out for wordy writing habits. We’ll also discuss the evidence that shows the benefits of writing in this style.

We don’t believe accessibility is an ‘add-on’, and so we consider accessibility all the way through the workshop. However, in this section, we focus on it. We provide an overview of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and then look at one of the most misunderstood accessibility requirements—writing text alternatives for images.
