Flemington Kensington Community Legal Centre would be honoured for you to join us at a fundraiser screening of Amy Berg’s new documentary West of Memphis at Cinema Nova on Friday 15 February at 7 pm. The event will raise urgently needed funds to support the 6 young men from Flemington’s African community who are taking the Victoria Police to the Federal Court this year on grounds of racial discrimination.
Please join us and help continue supporting these brave young men in their unprecedented legal battle to hold the Victoria Police to account for practices of systemic discrimination and racial profiling in Melbourne’s inner west. Join us on day 2 of the film's commercial release to watch award winning filmmaker Amy Berg’s searing new examination of the notorious murder case against the West Memphis Three, and their fight for justice against systemic failures of the Arkansas police and court systems.
ABOUT THE FILM: Starting with an examination of the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film goes on to uncover new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three victims of this shocking crime--Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. All three were teenagers when they became the target of the police investigation; all three went on to lose 18 years of their lives--imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. West of Memphis is the most recent and comprehensive examination of this shocking story in which bungled police investigations, compromised court procedures, and a community witch hunt conspired to scapegoat these three young teenagers in a stunning miscarriage of justice.
The film features a first rate soundtrack with an original score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis and tracks by Lucinda Williams, Band of Horses, Bob Dylan and Patti Smith, and many more. Go to the West of Memphis official site to view the trailer: http://www.sonyclassics.com/westofmemphis/
