Application of Oil Dispersants by Sub-surface Injection: Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Gulf of Mexico

 Dr Kenneth Lee

Presentation by Dr Kenneth Lee, Director, CSIRO Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship.

The premise of chemical oil dispersant use is to reduce net environmental impacts based on the dilution of oil below toxicity threshold limits and the stimulation of microbial induced degradation.
In the days following the blow-out of the Deepwater Horizon MC252 wellhead in the Gulf of Mexico, in addition to surface applications from aircraft and ships, chemical dispersants were directly injected into the wellhead at a depth of 1500m to reduce the impact of the surface oil reaching sensitive coastal environments.

Dr Kenneth Lee leads a national team of multidisciplinary researchers, he promotes research and development and the application of emerging technologies in ocean sciences to increase Australia's global competitiveness.
Prior to joining CSIRO in 2013, Dr Lee was the founding Executive Director of the Centre for Offshore Oil, Gas and Energy Research, a Centre of Expertise in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada.
In 2010, Essential Science Indicators (ScienceWatch.com) identified Dr Lee as one of the top 10 scientists in oil spill research during the previous decade - based on the total papers and citations. Dr. Lee has published over 350 scientific and technical publications in a number of scientific disciplines.
