Wind Power in South Australia - from zero to 26 % in 10 years

Prof Monica Oliphant & Nic Jacobson

Adj A/Prof Monica Oliphant, Past President ISES and Nic Jacobson, Independent Consultant

In 2003 there was no grid produced wind power in South Australia and the penetration of renewable electricity was only about 1 % - from land fill gas.  The main fuel sources for electricity generation were coal and gas.  Ten years later at the end of 2012, 26 % of the electricity generated came from grid connected wind and the State goal is to have 33 % of electricity generated from renewable energy sources by 2020.

This talk will expand on the current - predominantly wind and to a lesser extent solar - situation in South Australia, the different policies and incentive schemes that led to their growth and the problems and barriers experienced along the way.

Monica Oliphant runs her own consultancy specialising in residential energy efficiency and renewable energy.  She was President of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) 2008/09.  Monica is an Adjunct A/Professor at the University of South Australia in the Sustainable Energy Centre.  In 2012 she was inducted into the Australian Solar Council Hall of Fame.

Nic Jacobson is the Chair of the Clean Technologies for Developing Countries Industry Capability Team and has recently joined IT Power as Senior Engineer, Renewable Energy.
