Challenges for Mineral Exploration in South Australia

Richard Hillis, CEO of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre

Presentation by Richard Hillis, CEO of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre

The seminar will address the questions as to what actions are needed from industry, researchers & government in relation to the following issues

  • Are we facing 'peak oil' and 'peak copper' or are mineral resources 'infinitely finite'?
  • What opportunities do new resources such as shale gas, geothermal energy and undiscovered Olympic Dam-style copper deposits present South Australia?
  • What does South Australia need to do to maximise positive outcomes from its mineral resource endowment?
  • What are the implications for the manufacturing sector?

Richard Hillis is CEO of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC).  Richard graduated BSc (Hons) from Imperial College (London) and PhD from the University of Edinburgh.  He was previously Mawson Professor of Geology and Head of the Australian School of Petroleum at the University of Adelaide.  Richard is also a non-executive director of ASX-listed Petratherm and of AuScope and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
