If you want free and confidential help filling out your tax return and if you earn less than $50,000 our trained and accredited Tax Help volunteers may be able to help you.
Tax Help is for people on low incomes including, but not restricted to:
- o seniors
- o students
- o people from non-English speaking backgrounds
- o people with a disability
- o Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders.
You are eligible for Tax Help in the income year 2013–14 if your income is around $50,000 or less for the income year and you did NOT do any of these things:
· work as a contractor – for example, a contract cleaner or taxi driver
· run a business, including as a sole trader
· sell shares or an investment property
· own a rental property
· receive royalties
· receive distributions from a trust other than a managed fund
· receive foreign income other than a foreign pension or annuity.
Checklist
The basics
You will need your:
- o tax file number
- o Australian financial institution account details (BSB, account number and name) to receive any refund owing to you
- o for e-tax, you will need your Medicare card or number, if you wish to pre-fill your medical expenses.
Details of your income and expenses
These could include:
- o details from payment summaries from employers, super funds, Centrelink or Department of Veterans’ Affairs
- o statements from banks and financial institutions showing interest received
- o details of foreign pensions or other foreign income received
- o employment termination payment summaries
- o receipts for gifts, donations and work-related expenses
- o details of any child support payments you made.
If you have a spouse, you will need details of their income and expenses.
