Event Details

TANK 2
IMAGE • DANCE • THINK

A laboratory-symposium led by
FRANK VAN DE VEN & TESS DE QUINCEY

Following from the highly successful 2012 and 2013 events Frank and Tess will continue to share and explore the legacy of images that were an integral part of their BodyWeather training and performances within Min Tanaka’s MAI-JUKU performance group in Japan from 1984 until 1991. In addition, a new Image flow will be developed that reflects current cultural and scientific developments and interests.

Dancers, artists, artist-academics and academics are invited to participate in a week-long process that consists of a 6-day laboratory followed by a public symposium on day 7. They will further explore a new format for an interdisciplinary exchange between practitioners and writers in order to enhance the amalgamation of theory and practice research of images within the moving body.

Besides a rigorous introduction to the images and methods of BodyWeather image-practice, participants are asked to reflect upon areas of interest for further shaping whilst engaging with writers and thinkers to tease out questions underlying the physical work.

The laboratory will run daily from 10.00am to 5.00pm Monday - Saturday. The Symposium Performance will be from 3.00pm - 6.00pm on Sunday, 30 November 2014.

De Quincey Co

De Quincey Co is one of Australia’s most innovative and inspiring dance performance companies creating work at the intersection of dance, visual arts, theatre, music and performance. Led by Artistic Director Tess de Quincey, the company creates works of shifting scales for specific spaces – from a black box studio to a desert riverbed.

We invite you into a unique exchange – a rare and thought-provoking dance experience – that invites you to connect, experience and explore.

Our work is based in the BODYWEATHER practice, a broadbased training that proposes a practical strategy to the mind and to the body. It is not just for ‘professional dancers’ or ‘performance practitioners’ alone but is an open investigation that can be relevant for anyone interested in exploring the body.

The term and philosophical basis for BODYWEATHER was founded by butoh dancer Min Tanaka and his MAI-JUKU performance group, Japan. As a synthesis of both eastern and western practice and thought, it draws from ancient traditions as well as contemporary dance, sports training, martial arts, theatre, performance and avent-garde arts practice. It is a ground training that develops a conscious relation devoid of any specific aesthetic.
