Sydney Sustainability Jam
Join us in kicking off the Sydney Sustainability Jam at our opening party at Barangaroo on Friday night 2nd November and/or attend the Jam at UNSW Kensington Design Labs on the Saturday 3rd November and Sunday 4th November.
It’s a jam. No rules. Just solving problems.
It’s Design Methods + Teamwork + Creative Thinking and it makes useful, usable outcomes.
On November 2, 2012, people interested in a design-based approach to problem solving will meet at locations all over the globe. Everyone is welcome to be part of it - service designers, accountants, sustainability experts, strategists, investors, researchers, journalists, teachers, ecologists, hackers, makers, artists, permaculturists, students, musicians. We will form teams and work together for 48 hours to create real-world ideas which can make that little difference in the world.
Or a big difference.
Through the weekend, you'll be linked to other jammers at other sites all over the globe, working in different ways on different answers to the same challenge, sharing problems, advice, and insights. And on Sunday at 3pm, you will publish your results to the world.
What will happen?
We’ll kick off on Friday night with some introductions, explanations, inspiration, administration and the theme for the Global Jam. A drink but an early night.
We’ll meet again on Saturday morning to start the jam proper. This will take place at the UNSW Design Labs in Kensington. We’ll establish some challenges or opportunities to jam on and gather in working groups. We want the questions we’re asking to be real, so that the outcome will be useful and usable.

The groups will then set about jamming on the task together. There’ll be a service designer in each group to facilitate as much as is required. In a jam there’s no hierarchy, just a team collaborating.
Groups will self organise but everyone must have their presentations ready to go at 3pm Sunday. You may choose to jam late into the night, or call it before the sun goes down and pick it up well rested for the second day.
During the jam the organisers will provide healthy food, lots of water, stationary of all kinds, someone to ask questions of and lots of encouragement.
