About this event

Here is what she has to say about her garden:

If you have been to my garden before you will know it is an oasis in the suburbs. Albeit a somewhat scruffy and quirky oasis, but an oasis none the less. While most of the neighbours grow gums and grass, I have packed this place with a plethora of productive food plants, a few chickens and some native bees.

My three focuses are: water, fertility and practicality.

So firstly, the water. As the lines of the song go:

“the block is awkward- it faces west, long diagonals and sloping too. And in the distance, through the heat haze, In convoys of silence the cattle graze…”

Oops sorry, let that analogy get away from me. My point being that the property is sloping and it faces west. This brings challenges, as it can be very hot and dry, and surface water during rain can wash topsoil and nutrients away. To counter this I have: terraced some areas; dug ditches and filled them with mulch; and created raised garden bed/mounds that run across the contour of the property. I don’t want to call these swales, as they are not constructed to hold water back, but rather to allow the water to soak in and hydrate the mound where fruit trees are planted.

Secondly, fertility. I am obsessed with building fertility in the system by adding copious quantities of quality organic matter and supporting biodiversity in the soil and property more broadly. I am interested in brewed fertiliser teas, various composting methods and foliar fertilising. Along with fertility goes vitality. Vitality for the plants, the ecosystem and for my family and friends who get to eat the food and experience this place.

And finally, practicality. I love to find simple, but novel solutions to common problems. I love to repurpose discarded objects into useful abundance-supporting devices. Like my, almost, disused outside clothesline being used as a passionfruit climbing frame, broccoli boxes used as wicking boxes for strawberries or an old treadle rubbish bin that I turned into a rat-proof chicken feeder. I also like to grow different plants that grow easily in our climate, which means that some of the things I grow most people have never seen before.

Along with the tour and talk we will have a seed planting station set up, so bring along your favourite Autumn seeds to share, seedling punnets, blank labels and a tray to take them home in. Lyn will show you how she raises seeds, so you can take yours home and try it out.

Please also bring along:

- things to share: excess produce, seeds, seedlings, plant material

- your own morning tea

- a hat / umbrella

- a small folding chair

- a mug

We will be encouraging physical distancing at the event:

- keep 1.5 metres away from others wherever possible

- practise good hygiene

- please stay at home if you have any cold or flu symptoms

Children are welcome, but you must sign them in when you arrive, so we have a record of them attending.
