Event Details

This ‘back to basics’ training covers the role and legal duties of people who sit on the Committee or Board of a Victorian not-for-profit (NFP) community organisations.

This training is designed for people who currently sit on the Board or Committee of a NFP as well as people who are thinking of joining a Board or Committee. It may also be suitable for managers or senior employees in a NFP, who may be covered by the legal duties themselves or need to advise Board or Committee members of their legal responsibilities.  It is suitable for people involved in NFPs of all sizes, and for all incorporated legal structures as well as unincorporated community groups.

This training seminar will cover:

  • the role of Committee or Board members and others who ‘govern’ or ‘make decisions for’ the organisation
  • the 4 main legal responsibilities of Committee or Board members
  • potential liabilities of Committee or Board members, and what legal defences and protections are available,
  • simple actions Committee or Board members can take to ensure they comply with the law and protect themselves from liability.

The seminar will encourage questions and active participation. Participants will work in small groups on practical, relevant hypothetical scenarios.

Feedback from participants who attended this training in 2011:

The seminar presented the legal issues in an easy to understand manner for someone without a legal background.
