Leading on the Frontlines: Breakouts

This event is for those already registered to Acts 29's National Conference, Leading on the Frontlines. Having registered, this event allows an attendee to select their breakout sessions. Due to limited space in breakout venues, the breakouts will be filled on a first come, first served basis. As soon as the breakouts are filled, they will be closed. If someone with a ticket to Leading on the Frontlines doesn't manage to select their breakouts, of course they are still able attend a breakout, but it will have to be one for which there is still availability.
There are six breakouts on each day, and you will need to choose one (and only one) for each day. Descriptions below:
FRIDAY - Day 1:
Steve Timmis -- Gospel Communities
Steve Timmis is the Executive Director of Acts 29 and Lead Pastor of The Crowded House, a church-planting network in England. Steve co-founded The Porterbrook Network, a training initiative for church planters and ‘ordinary' Christians to "live ordinary life with gospel intentionality". He has taught and written extensively on how the gospel creates, and so is also best expressed through, community. In this breakout, Steve will unpack this idea and provide practical advice for leaders of gospel or missional communities.
Aaron Ivey — Growing a Culture of Worship
Aaron Ivey is the leader of Austin Stone Worship and serves as the Pastor of Worship at The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas. Aaron is passionate about leading the church body in corporate worship through content rich in theology, expression and mission. This breakout is for leaders passionate about the same.
Mark Sayers — Deep Leadership For An Age Of Shallowness
Mark Sayers is a writer and speaker who is highly sought out for his insights into faith, contemporary culture and the future of the church in the West. Mark has authored several books and is the Senior Leader of Red Church. In this breakout session Mark will explore the practical process that God uses to shape creative, bold and deep leaders. The kind of leaders that are desperately needed for the task of rebuilding faith, family and foundations in a culturally shallow age.
Dave & Wilma Fandey — Church Planting as Husband and Wife
David and Wilma Fandey have been married for over 20 years and have the joy of raising 6 kids! In 2003 they also planted The Fields Church in Carlsbad, California. David now serves as the Regional Director of Acts 29 Australia. This breakout will focus on the joys and challenges of church planting as husband and wife.
Professor Ian Harper -- Leadership in the Workplace
Ian Harper is one of Australia’s best known economists and the author of the 2011 Australian Christian Book of the Year, ‘Economics for Life’. Ian currently works at Deloitte, is a fellow of the Australian Institue of Company Directors and Emeritus Professor of The University of Melbourne. In this breakout, Ian will speak to Christian leadership lived out in the environment of a ‘secular’ workplace.
A29 members — Leading as Pastor’s Wives Q&A
This breakout will include a panel of Acts 29 church planting wives who are currently serving alongside their husbands in the gloriously difficult work of leading a church. Vanessa Mason is the wife of Guy Mason and along with raising three kids, leads the pastors wives at City on a Hill, in Melbourne, VIC. Ali Saunders is the wife of Dan Saunders and is serving alongside him in planting Arkhouse Church in St Kilda, VIC. Meeya Wright is the wife of Sam Wright and leads several of the ministries of Redemption Church in Ringwood, VIC. Fiona Gardiner is married to Greg Gardiner and serves, along with him, the flock at Disciples Church, Springfield, QLD. This Q&A session will be for women only, with the opportunity to ask about ministry, life and leadership.
SATURDAY - Day 2:
Leonce Crump -- Leading for the First Five Years
Leonce Crump is a former All-American wrestler, and professional NFL athlete for the New Orleans Saints. Leonce is married to Breanna and they have two daughters together. Currently, Leonce is the Lead Pastor of Renovation Church, in Atlanta, Georgia, which launched in 2010. Now 4 years on, Leonce has incredible wisdom and insight into leading a church both as a new senior leader, but also of a new church. This breakout will focus on the first five years of leading a church plant.
A29 members led by Dave Fandey -- Church Planting Q&A
This breakout will include a panel of Acts 29 church planters who are currently in the trenches. Greg Gardiner is the Lead Pastor of Disciples Church in Springfield, QLD; Adam Witanowski is the Lead Pastor of White Horse Church in Pyrmont, NSW; Mark Glenn is the Lead Pastor of The Fields Church in Moss Vale, NSW; Pete Cavanagh is the Lead Pastor of Rope Factory Church in Warragul, VIC and Andrew Grills is the Lead Pastor of City on a Hill: Geelong. This Q&A session will be moderated by David Fandey and will include the opportunity to ask all of your church planting related questions.
Murray Campbell -- Resurrecting a Church
Murray Campbell is the Lead Pastor of Mentone Baptist Church in Mentone, Victoria. Murray is married to Susan, and together they have three children. Since 2005, Murray has been involved in a revitalisation effort, attempting, by God’s grace, to turn the church around and bring gospel-driven vision, mission and growth. In this breakout Murray will give practical advice from his own experience on resurrecting a dying church.
Andrew & Heather Reid — Persevering in Marriage and Ministry
Andrew and Heather Reid have been married for 35 years and have two married sons and five grandchildren. Andrew is currently the Lead Pastor of Holy Trinity Doncaster in Melbourne, having previously taught at Ridley Melbourne, been the National Director of AFES and planted a church in WA. Heather is the Senior Staff Worker of Christian Union at RMIT, where she’s been training and encouraging university students to grow and mature in Christ since 2005. She also trains and mentors many of the congregants at Holy Trinity Doncaster. In this breakout session Andrew and Heather will speak from their experience about persevering in both marriage and ministry.
Simon Angus -- Leading Behind the Scenes
Simon Angus is the Executive Pastor for Operations at City on a Hill. This is his part-time job while he lectures at Monash University in Economics and speaks and writes apologetically as a scientist who is also a Christian. At City on a Hill, Simon provides strategic, operational and financial support to the pastors, directors, office and finance managers. This breakout will be a practical look at equipping leaders who serve away from the spotlight, doing many of the unseen tasks needed to maintain church health.
Peter Adam — Leading through Preaching
Peter Adam is one of Australia’s most influential evangelicals. Peter is the Vicar Emeritus of St. Jude’s Carlton, and Canon of St. Paul’s, while he continues his writing and preaching ministry. Peter has written extensively, with books including Speaking God’s Words: A Practical Theology of Preaching. Previously, Peter has served as Vicar of St. Jude’s Carlton for twenty years [1982-2001] and then Principal of Ridley Melbourne [2002-2012] . In this breakout Peter will share from his extensive insight and wisdom into the practical work of building, growing, and leading a congregation through preaching the Bible.
