Description

Event overvew

Three Friday morning workshops presented by Arts Law will focus on different legal issues faced by artists and creatives followed by a bookable advice clinic with limited one-to-one consultations.

Workshop 1 - Friday 30 October
Copyright and your creative practice: making it work for you

Creating art often means creating copyright. Let us walk you through owning and using your copyright, as well as creating copyright with other people. We’ll talk about what happens if someone uses your copyright without your permission, and how to get permission if you’d like to use someone else’s work. This session uses practical examples, case studies from artists’ experiences and hypothetical scenarios to help make copyright accessible and, dare we say, fun for creatives.

Afternoon Advice Clinic

Advice consultations are 45 minutes each. Bookable time slots are 1.30pm, 2,30pm and 3.30pm. To book an advice consultation after Workshop 1, registered participants should contact artslaw@artslaw.com.au with the subject “Arts Law advice clinic”.

Workshop 2 - Friday 6 November
Dotting the i’s: understanding arts contracts

Artists often enter into contracts without being completely sure what it all means for them. This session will take you through what a contract is, and some of the key issues artists often deal with when negotiating arts contracts. We’ll look at a few examples of contracts artists are often asked to sign, including commissions, and some of the terms to look out for in those agreements.

Afternoon Advice Clinic

Advice consultations are 45 minutes each. Bookable time slots are 1.30pm, 2,30pm and 3.30pm. To book an advice consultation after Workshop 2, registered participants should contact artslaw@artslaw.com.au with the subject “Arts Law advice clinic”.

Workshop 3 - Friday 13 November
Growing up: legal issues for expanding creative practices

Being an artist often means being a business. In this session, we look at some of the issues involved in engaging other creatives in your growing business (contracting and employing) and your legal responsibilities when doing business in NSW. We’ll give you some guidance about business structuring and insurance, as well as some of the things to consider when using social media to engage your audience.
