This 2-part workshop is a highlight for anyone working with leathers or planning to. The complexities of working with leather are endless, and by attending this workshop you will learn about different types of leathers and the production standards that will impact your final product. Suitable for any sized business wanting to learn more about working with leather.

Workshop Part 1:

  Tuesday 5th August, 6pm - 8:30pm

Workshop Part 2:

  Wednesday 6th August, 6pm - 8:30pm

Introduction to Leathers is a general workshop that covers all types of leathers from the very start of the process to the end. This workshop is ideal for people with no experience or part experience with leather.

The workshop provides a basic outline of how leather is produced and why certain types of leathers are suited better for certain applications or articles of apparel.

The workshop includes an exercise in determining the different types of leather according to International Leather Standards.

Participants are encouraged to bring their questions along, which can make up a large point of discussion during the workshop.

The outcome for participants is to obtain a basic knowledge of leather terminology and understanding of the processes involved in leather manufacturing.

Presented by

Gido Theilig

Leather Technologist

Leather Solutions

Gido's journey in the leather industry started in 1988 as a trainee in a shoe upper tannery, followed by an apprenticeship as a tanner and finisher in a tannery in Germany.

Gido completed his leather training with a tertiary education in leather technology through one of the most recognised leather colleges in Europe.

For the past 25 years he has been involved in the development and production of all types of leather for the fashion industry, upholstery and automotive industry.

Gido's knowledge and experience spans from the rawhide through to the cut components for the various leather types.

In recent years he has become more involved in leather training, consulting for the private and commercial sector and developed his own brand of biodegradable leather care products.

Gido's years in the industry have seen him travel to many leather producing countries, experiencing different technologies, raw materials and standards of quality.

Achieving the desired leather product outcome is a challenge at best, as there are many variables in the processing of leather since it is a natural product and subject to variation.

With this in mind, leather is a rarely identically reproducible and requires continuous improvement and process control.
