The Art of Entertainment

Friday Eve 4th, Sat 5th, Sun 6th, March 2016 Melbourne, Australia

Join artists from Hollywood’s Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Games + Animation at the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne for a weekend of live demos and masterclasses. Plus outdoor cinema screenings, insights from leading Australian studios, music, and the chance to meet up with local and international artists at the Shadow Electric Bar.

Get an international perspective and learn skills from top artists who will share their strategic thinking and practices developed in some of the industry’s most highly regarded studios. These artists have contributed to commercials, television productions, Academy Award winning films and AAA games including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar, World of Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo III, Call of Duty, Pirates of the Carribean, Captain America, Thor, amongst many others. Encouraging participation, they will share their techniques, workflows and experiences working in teams of advanced practitioners and award winning directors.

Demonstrating how they bring stories, characters, creatures and environments to life through a range of computer graphics programs, each will explain how they achieve such an impressive level of detail in the ever-tight timelines demanded of artists in the industry. Covering a breadth of production areas such as matte painting, compositing, lighting, 3D modelling, texturing, character design, in-game cinematics and art direction. This is a unique opportunity to hone skills, and meet fellow artists from Australia and beyond.

Hear from Australian studios about current projects, their studio culture, who they are employing and issues relevant to the Australian industry.

About Gnomon

Known in Hollywood as the pre-eminent school for entertainment design, Gnomon is described by Fast Company magazine as the MIT of VFX. The school has worked closely with the entertainment industry in LA since 1997 to develop curriculum that is highly regarded for continuing education and enrichment and had a placement rate of 94% in 2015 for their undergraduate programs. Gnomon has taken the title of School of the Year for the past two years in the prestigious CG Student Awards. Gnomon is known for building community events that encourage entertainment artists to come together, emerging and established alike, to share ideas and discuss issues relevant to the industry. A determining factor in the quality of education at any institution is the faculty. The tools and technology used in the film, games and advertising industries change so frequently,

Gnomon believe it is necessary to learn from working professionals who understand workplace challenges. Gnomon’s instructors work in leading studios and are versed in the most up-to-date software, hardware and techniques used in the film, game, television and advertising fields and are supported by Gnomon’s established curriculum. Gnomon curriculum develops and evolves in close relation to these industry workplace challenges. Alongside on-campus programs, Gnomon develops online workshops and resources for continuing education offering a chance to learn from masters in the entertainment industry.

Venue - Abbotsford Convent

What is now historically recognised as one the most important institutional complexes

constructed in Victoria in the 19th Century, the Abbotsford Convent became a community art and cultural centre at the turn of the 21st century. Now a unique and beautiful place with a rare fusion of old and new, the Abbotsford Convent’s 19th century landscape is filled with artists’ studios, cafes and bars, galleries, and markets and ghosts of times gone by.

From intimate to grand, industrial to opulent, the Convent’s spaces are historically fascinating, with views of the river, heritage gardens and only 4km from Melbourne’s CBD.

The Convent is the home of the Shadow Electric music venue, bar and outdoor cinema, which will host the opening of Gnomon Live Australia.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

We highly recommend catching Public Transport to the event as parking is limited and the weekends get very busy at the Abbotsford Convent. The clostest train station is 'Victoria Park' and is a short 10 minute walk to the venue.

If you do decide to park, there is paid parking available opposite the main entrance to the convent on St Heliers Street.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Definitely bring a note pad! You are also welcome to bring a laptop if you would like to work alongside the speakers when they do their demos.

We encouraging artists to bring an ipad or laptop (or orignial art) along to share their work with the rest of the attendees. Who knows, you might score some work out of it!

We will be providing everyone with a lanyard and a plastic pocket to hold a name card, we encourage attendees to design their own name card and bring it along.

Please note: Filming of the presentation and demos is strictly forbidden. Anyone seen filming will have their camera/ phone etc confiscated until the end of the day.
