Four Part Wind Turbine Installation Workshop

Biomorphosis will be running a four part workshop to build and install a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and pump at our small garden space behind the organic collective.
Time for each section 4 hours. And will run fortnightly from the 16th of August till the 27th of September.
- Recirculating wicking bed principals
- Welding (gasless MIG) basics and practical skills
- Steel lattice work principals
- Gear, drive and ratio principals
- Concrete formwork and foundations
- Arduino automation
- PVC pump construction and installation
On the first day we will talk about how our current system operates and how this wind turbine and pump will complement and enhance that system, going over the plan so that everyone is clear on the design and implementation. We will then get straight into the build, using a gasless mig welder, everyone will have a chance to do some welding as we construct the 2.5m tower that will hold the VAWT. We may not finish the tower on the day but will go through the fundamental steps and design considerations to do this and meeting for day two when the tower will be finished and ready for the next step.
The second day will be spent fitting the turbine to the tower and installing the running gear that will drive the pump. This will involve some technical engineering and an explanation on gear ratios and drives. More welding for those who are interested and finish off by testing our installation and drive in the wind if it's not too blowy.
On the third day we will lay concrete foundations and install the tower on site. This will involve basic concrete and formworking. We'll then talk about the last stage of the installation and arduino automation to control a brake and minimise hours of operation.
On the fourth day we will build and install the pump out of simple PVC connections, connecting it to recirculate the water into our header tank. We'll test all aspects of the design and talk about how we might improve it.
Cost is $180 for the 4 day workshop or $55 for individual four hour workshops paid on the day.
This workshop is limited to eight participants with two extra places held for single day participants if necessary.
