An invitation to dine with Epicurus isn’t to be taken lightly. The sign on his garden gate says it all: “Stranger, here you will do well to tarry; here our highest good is pleasure.”
Opting for the cosy surroundings of the North Fitzroy Star, rather than the natural beauty of Epicurus’s backyard, this evening’s gastronomic feast will certainly require that you linger.
However this evening isn't about overindulgence, nor the rampant pursuit of excess, but rather a sustained appreciation of life’s most important pleasures.
An opportunity to savour the piquancy of extraordinary ideas whilst enjoying heart-warming cuisine in the company of renowned philosopher and writer, Damon Young. With your fellow diners you'll be exploring topics from ethics and religion to friendship and happiness and you'll leave with a renewed understanding of the true pleasure of living wisely and well.
We bring groups of strangers together in unique spaces to explore experiences, ideas and aspirations with the help of our especially-designed conversation menus.
During the course of the evening you’ll have the chance for in-depth conversation with a number of other guests. The themes explored vary depending on the event.
When & Where
The School of Life Melbourne
Opened in March 2014, The School of Life Melbourne is devoted to developing emotional intelligence through the help of culture. We address such issues as how to find fulfilling work, how to master the art of relationships, how to understand one's past, how to achieve calm and how better to understand and, where necessary change, the world.
Located at 669 Bourke St, in the heart of Melbourne, we are a Conversation Cafe serving delicious coffee, a carefully curated shop, and a purpose built classroom.
The School of Life was founded in London in 2008 and is now open in Paris, Amsterdam, London and Melbourne. We offer classes, workshops, retreats, intensives, secular sermons, and therapies in person. We also publish books, film our events and make and sell a range of objects & tools that will assist you in the quest for a more fulfilled life. We also run a consulting and training service for businesses.
The School of Life is a place to step back and think intelligently about central emotional concerns. You will never be cornered by dogma, but we will direct you towards a variety of ideas from the humanities – from philosophy to literature, psychology to the visual arts – ideas that will exercise, stimulate and expand your mind. You will meet other curious, sociable and open-minded people in an atmosphere of exploration and enjoyment.
