Children participating in this program must be aged 8-12 years due to the nature of the program.
Ignite your imagination and build up your book writing talents. Join with author, Dr Gina Newton in this introductory workshop to the creative writing process.
Hear about how to get inspiration for your story, how to structure a story, working with words and pictures, the importance of great characters, and how to put it all together.
The workshop will include practical exercises and kids should leave with some basic foundations for their first book – like a catchy title, a story concept statement, and identification of the main character (protagonist).
About Gina Newton
Gina is a trained marine biologist, zoologist and science communicator. She has worked for many years in the areas of fisheries, environmental reporting, climate change and biodiversity conservation. Raising awareness of Australia’s unique environment and biodiversity is a particular interest. She has also given many national and international presentations about both climate change and biodiversity conservation in Australia. From childhood, Gina has loved to write and draw and her first picture book Blossom Possum the sky is falling down under (Scholastic Press, 2006; illustrator Kilmeny Niland) has sold over 100,000 copies. Gina’s second picture book, Blossom Possum and the Christmas Quacker (Scholastic Press; illustrator Christina Booth) was released in time for Christmas 2013. Inspired by Master story-teller Bryce Courtenay at his last Master Class in September 2012, Gina is now working on teenage fiction, with her first novels underway. She lives in Canberra with her husband, two teenage children and various dogs, cats and fish.
