Congressman Barney Frank
Former Chair, House Financial Services Committee
Co-Author, Dodd-Frank Act
"American politics, the global economy and the ongoing equality campaign"
Mr Frank is one of the most prominent members of the United States Congress of the 21st Century.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Mr Frank was elected as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1983 and served there for 23 years, before retiring in 2013.
Between 2007 and 2011, he was the Chair of the powerful House Financial Services Committee, during a time which coincided with the Global Financial Crisis.
As Chair, he co-authored the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The Wall Street Journal referred to it as ‘the most sweeping financial legislation in a generation.’ Similarly, the Boston Globe noted it as the ‘most important financial reform since the 1930s’.
The Washingtonian declared Mr Frank as the ‘brainiest, funniest, and most eloquent’ House member.
Mr Frank was the longest-serving openly gay member of Congress and was the first sitting Congressman to marry a same-sex partner. As a state representative in 1972, he was the first person in Massachusetts to file gay rights legislation.
He offers a unique and unparalleled perspective on the U.S. economy, LGBTIQ rights and the global financial system, and we are pleased that he will be visiting Australia to share his insights.
