          Winston Churchill never visited New Orleans, but if he had he certainly would have visited the National World War II Museum.  There is no more fitting memorial to all the millions of uniformed and civilian men and women who heroically led the fight for victory 70 years ago.

           The Churchill Centre and our affiliate, The Churchill Society of New Orleans, are pleased and proud to partner with the Museum to bring you the 31st International Churchill Conference in 2014, during the 70th anniversary year of Operation Overlord, the D-Day invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944.  The local conference committee has assembled an impressive line-up of speakers who will address the theme of the conference, Winston Churchill: Fighting and Writing, exploring both his military and his literary accomplishments.

           All registrations include admission to the magnificent National World War II Museum and you will have ample opportunities to explore its vast and impressive collection.  At the closing night's Black Tie Gala Dinner, you will be seated underneath a B-17 and other aircraft from World War II in the Museum's Freedom Pavilion: the Boeing Center. 

           For early arrivals, your local Committee has planned a special reception on Wednesday evening in the beautiful Garden District.  A walking tour of some of the Garden District is included for this evening.  A walking tour of the French Quarter will be offered on Thursday, and a plantations tour has been arranged for Sunday after the conference.

           You won't want to miss this opportunity to visit this world class museum and city, and to indulge your love of and interest in Winston Churchill. 

 

Schedule

          Early arrivals on Wednesday, April 2, are invited to a reception in the Fenner Home, the house where Confederate President Jefferson Davis died, and a walking tour of the Garden District.  The reception and light hors d'oeurves, featuring Ararat Brandy, will be hosted by The Churchill Society of New Orleans; however, dinner is on your own.  The famous Commander's Palace restaurant is not far from the Fenner Home, or the French Quarter has a multitude of fine dining establishments.  Please indicate on the registration form whether you plan to attend so that we can prepare for the number of guests.

          The Conference officially begins on Thursday, April 3, with registration at the Loews Hotel New Orleans beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continuing until 6:00 p.m. on the 9th Floor Prefunction Area.  Every conference attendee will receive an admission ticket to the Museum that allows a self-guided visit to the Museum galleries, and admission to the 4-D cinematic experience, Beyond All Boundaries, produced and narrated by Tom Hanks and shown exclusively at the Museum's Solomon Victory Theatre.

          The National World War II Museum is also offering an exclusive optional Call of Duty Tour that begins at the Museum at 9 a.m. on Thursday.  It focuses on small arms of World War II.  In this one hour tour, personally conducted by one of the Museum's Curators, you will have an opportunity to examine and handle pistols, rifles, sub-machine guns and machine guns from the U.S., Great Britain, Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union from the Museum's vault.  You are encouraged to bring your cameras to take non-flash photos.  Following your visit with the Museum's curators in the vault, you may then visit the Museum's galleries and view the film, Beyond All Boundaries.  Tickets for Call of Duty Tour are $125 each.  Please note that the tour is not suitable for children under 14 years of age.

          At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, a complimentary guided walking tour of the French Quarter will be conducted by a member of The Churchill Society of New Orleans.  Learn from a native of New Orleans all about the rich cultural heritage of the city and the French Quarter, as well as fascinating historical anecdotes.  The tour takes about two hours.  Please indicate on the form whether you plan to go on this tour so that we have an accurate headcount.

          That evening, first time conference attendees are invited to a hosted reception at 5:30 pm in the Beauregard Room of the Loews Hotel.  Our traditional no-host Welcome Reception for all attendees will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the hotel's LaFourche and Pointe Coupee Rooms.  Meet and mingle with old friends and make new ones.  Dinner is on your own; however, an optional group dinner has been organized by The Churchill Society of New Orleans at Arnaud's, a classic French Quarter restaurant that has a magnificent bust of Churchill in its 19th Century bar (Price, $125 per person).  Please note that the private dining room is upstairs at Arnaud's and accessible only by stairs; there are no elevators in this old building.

          Conference sessions begin at the Loews Hotel at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4, with greetings from J. Gregg Collins, Conference Committee Chairman; Dr. Nick Mueller, President of the National World War II Museum; and Lee Pollock, Executive Director of The Churchill Centre.  This will be followed immediately by a session on “Operation Overlord” featuring Warren Kimball, Professor-emeritus, Rutgers University; David M. Glantz, military historian and editor of The Journal of Slavic Military Studies; and Piers Brendon, British author and historian.  The session will be moderated by Dr. Nick Mueller

          Sessions continue with a presentation on "Churchill's Meeting with Montgomery Before the Break-out" by Nigel Hamilton, historian, author and biographer of Field Marshal Montgomery and Franklin D. Roosevelt, among others.  David Roll, author of The Hopkins Touch and Louis Johnson and the Arming of America: The Roosevelt and Truman Years, will talk about "Harry Hopkins Forging the Alliance to Defeat Hitler".

          At lunch at the hotel, we will feature a conversation among Allen Packwood, Director of the Churchill Archives in Cambridge; Alexander Perkins, great-grandson of Sir Winston, Afghanistan veteran and retired Captain of the Scots Guards; and Con Coughlin, journalist and author of  Churchill's First War, on the subject of "Afghanistan: 1897 and 2014".

          Afternoon on Friday will be open to allow attendees an opportunity to visit the National World War II Museum, or see the sites of New Orleans.  If you visited the Museum on Thursday, but wish to go back again, a discounted ticket for a return visit is only $6.00.  Or take in the "Final Mission" for $5.00, which is a re-creation of the last mission of the USS Tang submarine (requires standing for at least 15 minutes).

          A reception and dinner with speaker (TBD) will be held in the Louisiana Ballroom of the Loews Hotel beginning at 6:00 pm.

          The second day of Conference sessions, Saturday, April 5, begins with a fascinating presentation by Churchill's granddaughter, The Hon. Celia Sandys, on "Churchill: The Power of Words".  She will be followed by Peter Clarke, author of Mr. Churchill's Profession: The Statesman as Author and the Book that Defined the 'Special Relationship'.

          Two other sessions Saturday morning will feature Michael McMenamin, co-author of Becoming Winston Churchill, talking about "Churchill's Mentor: Bourke Cockran"; and Prof. Michael Shelden, author and teacher who will speak on "Winston Churchill: Young Titan".  Closing out the morning session will be James W. Muller, Chairman of The Churchill Centre Board of Academic Advisers, who will lead a book discussion of Churchill's fifth volume of his World War II memoirs, The Second World War: Volume V, Closing the Ring.  Piers Brendon and Keith Huxen, Senior Director of Research & History at the Museum, will join Prof. Muller in this discussion.

            Following luncheon at the Loews Hotel, your afternoon will again be open to visit the Museum or tour New Orleans.  That evening, transportation will be provided to and from the hotel and the National World War II Museum where a reception and Gala Dinner (black tie optional, small medals) will be held in the Freedom Pavilion of the Museum.  Enjoy a special New Orleans menu prepared by Chef John Besh, with entertainment from The Victory Belles.  Hanging overhead are aircraft that flew during the war: a B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, TBM Avenger, Douglas Dauntless, Vought F4U Corsair, and a P-51 Mustang. 

Accommodations

           Our conference hotel is the Loews Hotel New Orleans.  Room rate is $220.00 (single or double), plus 13% tax and an occupancy tax of $1.00 per night.  Located at 300 Poydras Street, the hotel is near the river, about 6 blocks (15 minutes walk) from the Museum, and on the edge of The French Quarter.  All guest rooms have complimentary WiFi, rates are guaranteed 3 days before and after the conference, and reservations must be made by March 14, 2014.  Reservations may be made by calling 1-866-211-6411 (identify yourself as part of The Churchill Centre conference) or online at http://xrl.us/bqdxce.

 Conference Registration

          Basic conference registration includes all conference sessions, Welcome Reception on Thursday, reception and dinner on Friday, and admission to the exhibits at the National World War II Museum and showing of the 4-D cinematic experience, Beyond All Boundaries.  Basic registration is $450 per person for members; $600 for non-members.  Two premier registration packages are offered:

  • Chartwell Club Package:  This package includes everything in the Basic registration plus an invitation to a special VIP Reception with our speakers, special seating at both dinners, ticket to the "Call of Duty" museum tour, and student sponsorship.  Price is $1,500 per person and includes a $620 tax deduction ($1,390 deduction for a couple).
  • Blenheim Club Package:  Includes everything in the Basic registration, plus the Saturday Gala dinner ticket and student sponsorship.  Price is $1,100 per person and includes a $365 tax deduction ($880 for a couple).

Recognizing that some sessions or individual speakers may appeal to a larger audience beyond the Centre’s membership, single-day tickets may be purchased for each day’s activities for $150 in lieu of a full registration.

           A special teacher registration of $100 is available for full-time teachers at middle school, high school, or college levels.  This special price includes all conference sessions, two luncheons, and free admission to the Museum; the Friday night reception and dinner are extra.

           Optional events are the dinner at Arnaud's on Thursday evening, the Gala Dinner on Saturday, as well as the exclusive weapons vault guided tour, "Call of Duty", and the plantation tours on Sunday.  Each requires the purchase of separate tickets.  Also, the Wednesday evening reception in the Garden District and the Thursday afternoon walking tour of the French Quarter are complimentary; however, please indicate whether you plan or going on either or both of these so that we can prepare with the necessary food and beverages for the reception and guides.

           The Churchill Centre is delighted to once again offer complimentary registration to all conference sessions and luncheons for up to 50 full-time students (high school and college).  Requests for a special student complimentary ticket must be made no later than March 15 by phone or email (1-888-WSC-1874; jreash@winstonchurchill.org).
